Students attend Mind over Metal Camp

Junior high students from Gift Lake School are more familiar with welding after attending the Mind over Metal welding camp. The camp, hosted by the Canadian Welding Association Foundation, exposed students to welding safety, gas metal arc welding, introduction to welding symbols and the impact the trade has on our daily lives.

In addition to this, Skills Alberta and other organizations attended the camp to provide information to students about future career opportunities. Gift Lake students attended the Mind over Metal camp at St. Joseph High School in Edmonton from August 17th – 21st. The technical portion of the camp was spearheaded by Dayton Block, welding and fabrication instructor at St. Joseph High School and Ken McKen, Canadian Welding Association Manager for Western Canada. Special thanks to Chipewyan Lake School Teacher Lee Haroldson for helping to drive and supervise Gift Lake School students, Cenovus Energy for covering the cost of busing and accommodations and to the Canadian Welding Association Foundations for covering course and instructor costs.
